This month, as the National Public Pension Coalition (NPPC) commemorates its 16th year, we find ourselves at an important milestone in our ongoing journey to champion the retirement security of working families. Over the past decade and a half, we have navigated triumphant victories and challenging setbacks in our unwavering commitment to safeguarding public pensions. Our mission to defend public pensions has withstood the test of time, weathering the storm of the Great Recession and, most recently, the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which posed significant challenges to public pensions.

Sixteen years ago, NPPC was born out of the urgent need to defend pensions, sparked by the closure of Alaska’s public pension plans in 2005. Today, we are gearing up for a significant battle in the very state that started it all. The closure of Alaska’s pension plan was critical in our history, catalyzing our formation and the ongoing fight for retirement security.

Our journey may have endured challenges, but our commitment to securing the retirement of countless individuals remains resolute. As we forge ahead, we remain grateful for our unwavering support and dedication to our cause. Together, we will continue to make strides toward a future where retirement security is a reality for all.
